Singapore server

1. Select Singapore CDN provider and planning
- Determine the target: only for Singapore or the entire Asia-Pacific region; evaluate traffic peaks and bandwidth costs.- Recommended vendors: Cloudflare (Global + SG PoP), AWS CloudFront (Singapore edge), KeyCDN, Akamai, Fastly.
- Key points for selection: whether it supports custom certificates, whether it has Singapore PoP, caching rules and edge function (Edge Worker) support.
2. DNS and domain name preparation
- Move domain name DNS hosting to an easy-to-manage DNS provider (or use a CDN to bring its own DNS).- Prepare a CNAME or A record for the CDN (e.g. point www.example.com CNAME to cdn.provider.net according to the CDN instructions).
- Configuring low TTL facilitates testing and debugging, and TTL can be increased in production.
3. Obtain an SSL certificate (Let’s Encrypt - free recommended)
- Use Certbot's webroot or DNS method to apply: for example, certbot certonly --webroot -w /var/www/html -d example.com -d www.example.com.- If using a CDN proxy (such as Cloudflare), you need to use DNS challenges: certbot certonly --manual --preferred-challenges dns -d example.com.
- Commercial certificates can be purchased and downloaded (including private key and public key chain).
4. Using CDN to host the certificate vs installing it at the origin site
- If the CDN supports hosting certificates (automatic renewal), use CDN hosting first to simplify operation and maintenance (Cloudflare/KeyCDN, etc.).- If using CloudFront, it is recommended to import the certificate into AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) and deploy it in the Singapore region.
- The origin site still needs to provide a certificate or Cloudflare's Origin Certificate to ensure the security of HTTPS to the origin site.
5. Deploy certificate on Nginx/Apache (example Nginx)
- Put fullchain.pem and privkey.pem into /etc/ssl/example/ and set permissions.- Configuration example: server { listen 443 ssl; server_name example.com; ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem; ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem; ssl_protocols TLSv1.2 TLSv1.3; ssl_ciphers HIGH:!aNULL:!MD5; }.
- Add 80 port redirection: server { listen 80; server_name example.com; return 301 https://$host$request_uri; }.
6. Enable HTTPS and enforcement policy on CDN
- Enable HTTPS and "Strict" or "Full (Strict)" mode in the CDN management panel to verify the origin certificate.- Enable automatic rewriting of HTTP to HTTPS and HSTS (note the risks of max-age and preload).
- If there are edge rules, set URL rewriting and enforce HTTPS rules.
7. Caching strategy and SEO-friendly settings
- Set long cache (Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable) for static resources (.css/.js/.jpg/.png).- Set short cache or no cache for HTML pages and use ETag/Last-Modified.
- Ensure that CDN retains and forwards Canonical, hreflang, Set-Cookie and other important headers for SEO.
8. Mixed content and resource replacement
- Replace resources in the entire site with HTTPS, and check whether there are http links in images, third-party scripts, and iframes.- Use your browser console or automated tools (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb) to detect and fix crawling issues caused by mixed content.
9. Testing and verification steps
- SSL test: Use SSL Labs (Qualys) to scan the domain name to ensure A level and TLS1.2/1.3 support.- Command line: curl -I -L https://example.com Check 301 redirection and response header; openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.com Check the certificate chain.
- Performance test: GTmetrix/WEBPAGETEST tests loading latency and cache hit rate on the Singapore node.
10. SEO related additional settings
- Ensure that the sitemap (sitemap.xml) and robots.txt are accessible under HTTPS and resubmit the HTTPS version in Search Console (Google/Baidu Webmaster).- Set the preferred domain in Search Console and submit indexing requests, ensuring the server returns the correct Canonical pointing to the HTTPS version.
11. Automatic renewal and operation and maintenance tips
- Let’s Encrypt configures Certbot scheduled tasks: certbot renew --quiet and automatically reloads Nginx after renewal (systemctl reload nginx).- Monitor certificate expiration, OCSP Stapling, TLS handshake failure logs, and set alarms.
12. Frequently Asked Questions and Security Enhancements
- Enable OCSP Stapling, disable TLS1.0/1.1, enable TLS1.3; restrict CORS that is too wide; use Web Application Firewall (WAF).- If connecting to third-party services (payment/analysis), confirm that these services support HTTPS and configure a whitelist IP or subdomain name.
13. Question: After deploying CDN in Singapore, do I still need to enable SSL on the origin site?
A: It is strongly recommended to enable SSL at the origin site as well. Even if the CDN to the browser is HTTPS, if HTTP is used from the CDN to the origin site, a "semi-encrypted" path will occur, which reduces security and may cause the return to the origin to fail in the CDN "Full (Strict)" mode. You can use the Origin Certificate issued by CDN or a self-signed certificate with Strict mode.
14. Question: How to ensure that HTTPS deployment will not affect SEO ranking?
A: Ensure that all HTTP pages are permanently redirected with 301 to the corresponding HTTPS page, update Canonical to HTTPS, submit an HTTPS sitemap, and set the preferred version in the Search Console. Properly setting cache and HSTS (use preload with caution) can improve user experience and SEO.
15. Question: Can using a CDN such as Cloudflare also improve the access speed for Singapore users?
A: Yes. Choosing a CDN with a Singapore PoP can significantly reduce latency. Combined with appropriate caching strategies, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, image optimization (WebP/AVIF) and compression (gzip/br), you can improve both speed and SEO performance.- Latest articles
